5/30/2023 0 Comments Anderson benedictAccording to the first, most commonly invoked account, nations were first imagined by means of the printing press. If we ask how nations are imagined, Anderson provides two quite separate explanations. No one has ever seen a nation except “in their mind’s eye.” Nations, for this reason, only exist since we imagine them to exist. Unlike small communities in which everyone knows everyone else, nations have too many members, and the vast majority of whom will never, and can never, meet. That is, they are not natural, organic, or just plain given, but instead the result of an act of creation. Nations are “imagined communities,” we are told. While the book is a brilliant exposition of the nature of nationalism, and well worth its fame, it is more than anything the title of the book that has been turned into a meme. Google Scholar counts some 112,589 citations, a number which should be enough to give you tenure at a major university at least ten times over. Even forty years after its initial publication, it is widely referenced, and a standard feature on reading lists everywhere. Benedict Anderson’s book on nationalism is a modern classic ( Anderson 2006).

5/30/2023 0 Comments Bayou moon ilona andrewsMar is as far from damsel in distress as you can get, and makes the sexy changeling work for it. I liked how badass Cerise is! There’s this one scene where she and William are in a bit of a pickle, and she’s like don’t interfere, I’ll take all of these baddies on myself, and does. Mar lives in an enchanted swamp where cats are green, fish have legs, and mud burns after growing up in that kind of environment you can’t help but be a little off. She’s even more backwoods than Rose from book 1 which was great because I really enjoyed that aspect of the first installment. BAYOU MOON is another unmissable listen by this fabulous writer / narrator duo! I’ve loved pretty much every protagonist that Andrews has thrown my way, and Cerise was no different. I didn’t have to pay as much attention to the world-building, although the Mire is an extremely weird place with its own set of magical rules, so there were still tons of new tidbits to take in. I enjoyed this installment slightly more than the first, and I think that’s because I was a little more familiar with THE EDGE universe this time around. This book picks-up right where ON THE EDGE left off, except this time the focus shifts to William who just so happens to be a wolf changeling-my favourite kind! We also get to meet Cerise Mar, a heroine who’s on the same level as Kate Daniels from Ilona Andrews’ other series, and I immediately adored her. Another epic listen by this fantastic duo (trio?)! 5/30/2023 0 Comments Off the record camryn garrettJosie wants to expose the man responsible, but she’s reluctant to speak up, unsure if this is her story to tell. Reading “The Nix” was an experience of complete unadulterated pleasure. I loved it on the first page as powerfully as I did on the last.…Nathan Hill? He’s gonna be famous. The Nix is hugely entertaining and unfailingly smart, and the author seems incapable of writing a pedestrian sentence or spinning a boring story. Hill has so much talent to burn that he can pull off just about any style, imagine himself into any person and convincingly portray any place or time. The Nix won the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction from the Los Angeles Times The Nix was a finalist for the NBCC Leonard Award for Best Debut of the Year The Nix was named one of the best books of the year by 5/29/2023 0 Comments Det händer nu by Sofia NordinOther famous poets are Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, André Bjerke, Henrik Ibsen, Sigbjørn Obstfelder, Henrik Wergeland, Olav H. My Norwegian teacher used a lot of Rolf Jacobsen’s poetry in the classroom. There are of course some classic poems and highly regarded poets that are likely to be taught more than others. If I’m not mistaken, I think it’s largely up to the teachers to choose the material they feel would be most beneficial for their particular class, so I’m not sure there’s a particular century or poetic movement in focus. I can’t really answer as to what most people are taught in school, as most poetry is taught in high school and I did the IB where things are done a little differently than in the classic Norwegian system. And no, it’s not a problem at all, I love answering asks <3 Hei! Oh my god, I’m honoured that you’d come to me with this question, even though I post so little about Norway and Norwegian these days. 5/29/2023 0 Comments No david gets in troubleShannon’s illustrations give a hand-painted feel to the story and he makes David appear almost toylike, with a giant head and a wooden doll’s body, with an open mouth full of pointed teeth. There are very few words in the book, and the font is a large, handwritten font that makes for a fun and interactive read-aloud. David Shannon’s use of bright acrylics will attract readers and listeners alike, as will David’s exaggerated facial expressions and actions. I love you!” The book, which received Caldecott Honors in 1999, reinforces to young listeners and readers – and parents – that no matter how much trouble you get into, and whether or not your parents get angry with you, they will always love you. David’s mother is the only voice heard throughout the story, and what she has to say will also be very familiar to No David’s audience: “Come back here!” “No! No! No!” “Put your toys away!” “Stop that this instant!” When David ends up being punished for breaking a vase, though, Mom is also tells him “Yes, David. Preschoolers and toddlers alike will understand where David, the little boy in David Shannon’s No, David! is coming from: he’s a little boy who just wants to have fun, whether it’s running down the street naked, causing a flood as he plays in the bathtub, picking his nose, or chewing his food with his mouth wide open. 5/29/2023 0 Comments The Cyberiad by Stanisław LemLem takes a few of the listed elements and makes fun of the incapability of humankind to use this unique possibility to push cultural and technological evolution. I am just doing it, but please don´t judge, I am not normal. And rereading feels like, yuck, extra overachiever work. The focus is on the philosophical implications, not much action in this one, but the complex mind games Lem is playing with the reader inspire too many hobby meta thoughts, so that it might be always wise to take notes while reading Lem, because one can´t get this stuff immediately. In general, what tribal stone age people would to with quantum teleportation, and why they have to hilariously fail trying. Getting no or the wrong, unexpected answer. There are different options on how to deal with this thing, difficult to talk about it, without spoilering, so I will just list a few possibilities:īuilding something good or bad with the help of the information.ĭestroying oneself with the things built.Ĭollapsing or starting a nuclear WW3 because of the ideological and political consequences. Theories about aliens and possible future implications of contacts with them enable Lem to imply and satirize everything out of ridiculous human culture. |
